The Theology Behind: Learning From Those Who Came Before Us

The Theology Behind: Learning From Those Who Came Before Us

Every generation faces its own storms—questions of justice, truth, identity, and what it means to live faithfully in a world that often feels bent in the wrong direction. Ours is no different. Yet when we look back through the pages of history, we discover that we are not the first generation to wrestle with things such as doubt, obedience, suffering, or grace.
And that’s where our new series, The Theology Behind, begins.

In this YouTube series, we explore the lives, struggles, and beliefs of men and women who shaped the world—sometimes for good, sometimes through terrible failures—and uncover the biblical convictions that molded them along the way. These aren’t pristine saints or mythical heroes. They were real people with real faith, real sin, and real dependence on the same God that we trust today.

Why Look Back?

Looking into the past is often a mirror—showing us who we are while pointing us toward who we can become.

History is full of voices who confronted oppression and injustice, like Frederick Douglass, whose faith was refined through unimaginable suffering. It includes those who deeply failed before being transformed by grace, like John Newton, whose testimony reminds us that God can redeem even the most hardened of hearts. These stories matter. Not because they showcase human achievement, but because they reveal what the gospel looks like when it’s lived out in the tension between human weakness and God’s unshakable truth.

A Faith That Endures

The gospel that formed their theology is the same gospel shaping ours today.

• The Word that called enslaved people into the dignity of God’s image is the same Word that speaks against injustice now.
• The grace that humbled slave traders is the same grace that confronts our sin and calls us to repentance today.
• The hope that gave courage to reformers, abolitionists, and everyday believers still strengthens us to stand firm when culture shifts, when suffering comes, and when truth is challenged.

Their stories are threads woven into the same tapestry that God is still stitching—an amazing and incredible redemption story across generations.

What You Can Expect

Each episode digs beneath biography and into belief. It uncovers the theological convictions underneath their lives, decisions, contradictions, and courage.

We’re not just asking what they did.
We’re asking why they lived the way they did.

We look at how belief shapes action.
How theology becomes movement.
And the gospel, when embraced, never fails to leave its mark on the world.

Join the Journey

As you watch….or listen, my prayer is that you’ll find yourself encouraged and even challenged.
Not just to admire the faithfulness we see in the past, but to step faithfully into your own calling today.

History is rich with witnesses who show us that God’s truth is not bound by time.
And as we explore The Theology Behind, we are reminded that the same Spirit who shaped them is shaping us still….and inviting us to live boldly, love deeply, seek justice, and walk humbly with our God.
